One Sentence – Beaunvoliant

1 Speak
When Peregrine speaks to her peers, she speaks akin to a trained soldier with three minutes left until it is time to go into the front line, but when she speaks to her siblings, she talks gently yet firmly, motherly.

2 Touch
When they were children, Aedelia remembers the warm feeling of her brother silently stroking her hair as she cried after scraping her knee.

3 Memory
Valerius all too often reminds Peregrine of what their mother looks like.

4 Vanilla
He realizes, with a start, that Peregrine brought back a bottle of their second cousin Yrazephorah’s perfume with her to the New World.

5 Chocolate
They shared a chocolate cake in the tea room of the Beaunvoliant household in Brestia the morning before Peregrine, Aedelia, and Valerius left for Granado Espada, and Yrazephorah could not finish her slice.

6 Ways and Means
Valerius only told them about Dimidium after they had already speculated and figured it out.

7 Belief
She would join the army against Vespanola, and she would come out of it alive, just to show she could use a sword, just to prove her father wrong.

8 Linger
She glanced at herself in the mirror and stayed there for a while, realizing how wrong it was for her to see Peregrine Beaunvoliant in a gown.

9 Illuminance
Valerius had such golden hair, Aedelia thought, more golden than Peregrine’s, more golden than hers, more golden than the necklaces and bracelets lady aristocrats wore, more golden than the lacklustre shine in his eyes.

10 Ornament
‘You look beautiful,’ is what Mother said after she put the jewelled clip into Aedelia’s hair.

11 Coup de Foudre
Peregrine still remembered the first time she witnessed her father defeating an opponent using only a rapier, and the blade was sharp and thin and the metal shone like no other, and she was thirteen years old.

12 Archway
Mother always talked about building an archway of roses in the garden, but they were not home to see it once she wrote that she already had it made.

13 Fate
The boat slowly docked at the Port of Coimbra, and they could only wonder what would happen next.

14 Pulse
Aedelia could not count the number of times she saw a person die in front of her own eyes.

15 Envelope
The letter seems unimposing, but the news that their parents would be staying in Granado Espada for two weeks sends chills up Peregrine’s spine.

16 Cold
‘He forgot his coat,’ she almost whispers.

17 Need
What would life be like if she went alone?

18 Drunk
When Valerius has too much wine he first gets irritable, then amiable, then he starts to list all the reasons why Dimidium is the worst person in the world, then he starts to say how much he loves him.

19 Mask
It was made of pure metal, but it was beautiful and she wore it anyway.

20 Rose
He always had a particular dislike with roses and their thorns until Dimidium sent him a bouquet of them, thorns removed, bound with a soft velvety ribbon, with no note.

21 Two
They had been living in the city of Auch in Granado Espada for almost two years now, yet they still woke up to a new morning every day.

22 Fresh
He was seventeen years old, and he had killed twenty.

23 Bribe
It was easy to persuade Valerius to do something once you had a new pistol in your hands.

24 Error
The first thing their father did was slap Peregrine across the face, call her shameless, then walk past.

25 Appetite
She longed to be in the battlefield, to hear the clash of steel against steel, and her sister longed to never hear that striking sound.

26 Refrain
Aedelia missed the sound of Yrazephorah’s singing.

27 Family
She held them close, both of them, one seventeen and the other twelve, herself twenty, with the sound of greaves clanking across the ground and the sound of Brestian swords clashing against Vespanolan armor filling the air.

28 Grieve
When the doctor told her she was too sickly to go with them at the present time, Yrazephorah could not help but break down and sob.

29 Vapor
She looked a bit like him, but a bit like her, and never just one of them, but she still admired him, even if Father did not see her.

30 Tea
Surprisingly, Valerius was always the one who added the most sugar.

31 Medicine
Aedelia learned their names and their uses, learned how to improvise, learned how to save lives, and learned how to speak consoling words before death finally came for the ones that wouldn’t make it.

32 Moth
‘Perri, why is that butterfly brown and boring?’

33 Perfect
She still had her mother’s hair clip in the drawer of her desk, and it was untouched since the moment she had placed it in there.

34 Rope
She couldn’t believe they were finally sailing toward the New World, and she was apprehensive as well as excited.

35 Wind
In the heat of battle, metal-clad bodies falling and dancing with death, blades clashing and blood streaked across the ground, Peregrine felt a rush of wind near her ear and realized it was do or die here: she had almost been shot.

36 Crossroads
At first he had been taught how to use a rifle, hunting with his father during late afternoons when the sun seemed to shy away from the world, but one distant relative in the army handed him a pistol one day and he knew which trigger his hand needed to pull.

37 Summer
During her twelfth summer of life, Aedelia brought home a wounded cat and nursed him back to health on her own, and his name was Valentine.

38 Candy
Valerius likes sweets, but people hardly ever knew that, but what people knew even less was that his favourites were always the ones his mother made for him when he was younger.

39 Photograph
There are no pictures of their old house, their parents, or Brestia in general in their new home in Auch.

40 Spoon
Peregrine and Father were arguing at the dinner table again, and suddenly Aedelia didn’t feel like eating anymore.

41 Forest

Back in Brestia during his teens, on days when he was supposed to be hunting, he sometimes just leaned against tree trunks and listened.

42 Mirror
She never wore that gown again, and in retrospect she wishes she had.

43 Smoke
He relished the sound of gunfire coming from his own pistols.

44 Shine
Peregrine still couldn’t fathom how her younger sister’s eyes still shone so bright after all that happened.

45 Balloon
Only family, she reasoned, could elicit this much love.

46 Vine
The wine tasted strange and maybe it was because he wasn’t used to it, but he hated these formal parties and he hated gatherings of too many people in stuffy suits and even stuffier gowns, and he was drunk.

47 Butterfly
‘Aeda, that’s a moth, not a butterfly, that’s why it looks different.’

48 Gloves
She did not want her hands to be stained with the blood of fallen soldiers.

49 Venom
His words were cruel and his sword was even crueller, but Peregrine did love her father, and he did love her.

50 Remain
They would stay here, and even if it was at the brink of conflict and ridden with undiscovered dangers, even if they might not make it, they were together, and they would still stay.
